Rainy Tuesday; Sick in Bed

I had all intentions of posting much more in January, yet with my lack of personal internet and the WLAN (my 'borrowed' building internet) cutting out at a exponential rate as of late, I just didn't. So mark my words: January 17th is the start of real blogging... yet again!

Let me catch you up on a few things I've missed since posting pre-New Years:

'90s dance party! I forgot how different the parts of this city can be. A few friends from undergrad decided to venture out and check out a bar that all of us had heard of, yet none of us had been: Clintons. I'm fairly convinced we will, at some point, end of on their facebook page as they took a picture of us and said "this won't end up on the internet"... hmm... I'm pretty sure that's what they all say! Ultra awesome night that ended with burritos. Can't beat that!

The true realization that I love this city. I spent one day last weekend exploring more North of where I live with MC (my former roommate from Uni). I've been here a few months and haven't even stepped foot that way, so I figured a long walkabout was in order. It's not New York or London, but it's pretty amazing.

Nerd stuff: I started taking a fabric dying class. I've always had this strange attraction to textile, so when I was flipping through a course catalogue and saw it was available I jumped right on it. I've been to one class and so far it's pretty neat. I want to learn how to dye over already dyed fabrics. It's pretty exciting (it's not just me right?)! I initially was looking for an art class, but the one that peaked my interest was abstract painting and the class had a waiting list longer than the amount of people in the actual class, so that didn't really pan out for me. Next term! This sort of makes me wish I had saved up and went to Parsons like I had once dreamed. Le sigh. One day!

The Raptors! I was working a bit later than usual on Friday night and ended up scoring 4 tickets to the Raptors game... in the exclusive/ executive/ whatever the fancy section is called. Hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, beer... oh my!

I'm watching National Geographic Inside The Milky Way, now. It's blowing my mind. I'm still in bed, feeling mediocre at best.

Come on vitamins... do your thing!

The season of gifting (and other stories)

I've been haphazardly posting these last few months. Pinky swear they will be coming much more frequently (pending my 'borrowed' internet doesn't cut out) in the next little while.

Even though I mentioned I was finally settled, turns out I'm still missing a few key things like a way to change my front hall closet light... and maybe some light bulbs and tongs that don't melt when you put them in hot oil (oops). Other than that, I'm basically set. It feels so good!

This past weekend I was out looking for 2 important gifts (for my little sisters)-- you'd think they'd be easy to buy for, but they are not. I've come up with a few great ideas, but I still haven't purchased them. Last minute shopper, indeed. But I did stop into the Gap and managed to score these sweet boots:

Sincere apologies for the horrific BB quality of these photos lately (the boots shot included), my camera is out of batteries and I haven't re-charged them yet. But I digress-- these were on the 40% off sale, and were already on sale, so I ended up with beautiful boots for very little. Happy Birthday to me!

Cleaning supplies and vitamins aside, I only bought myself one other gift-- a birthdaynewsyears dress! This crazy, tight, black with mesh dress... with fringe. Unreal.

It's like Morticia Addams meets a Pterodactyl and I love it. So. Much. Fringe. Oh, and a crown. Because I'm a true believer that it doesn't matter how old you are, you can always wear a crown on your birthday.

So this is the week-- the final week before I really really need to buy those presents. Online shopping for gifts commences in ...5...4...3...2...1

Well, I'm a few months behind. Nearly 3 months to be exact. Never really sure where the time goes, but suddenly I've been living here for 3 months and have seen my fair share of couches in that time. But now I'm settled in my new digs.

I landed up in the area I wanted to live in since the day I arrived back in the city. It's close to everything (food, drink, hangouts & work). And it's nearly full of all the stuff I love.

I'm still in the midst of collecting more things. I need a vintage chair for beside the lamp and perhaps a bedside table (mirrored... you're feeling this right?) so my book and water can have a home!

It's tiny but it's all mine. And A lives 2 floors above my place, so there's always company. (And a gym and sauna and court yard and about 700 other people).

I'm feeling pretty good!

After realizing I have been in front of the television more than I have with a book in my hand, I decided to take a trip to Chapters. There's something so wonderful about being in a huge room filled with non-spine cracked books just waiting to be read. Yep, nerdy to the max(xx), but still terribly enjoyable!

I was actually looking for A Good Year (the film that was based on this book is one of my favourites-- it's up there with You've Got Mail and Serendipity for feel good films I could watch over and over again) the novel by Peter Mayle, but they didn't have it. I ended up buying THE BOOK OF AWESOME, which, *surprise surprise* was pretty amazing, How to lose friends and alienate people: A memoir (loving it at the moment), the newest Nick Hornby and a random book by an Australian author I have never heard of. That was Sunday. Today and Wednesday and I'm already a book 1/2 into my latest collection.

I really needed the switch up: sitting down, tea in hand with a book. It just feels so good; so awesome (see: THE BOOK OF AWESOME reference above)!

And so, I've been thinking about all the awesome little things. And clearly, this guy does, too:

The other evening a few friends and I went to Parliament to see the brand new light show, Mosaika! It was pretty cool-- and there were lots of people, especially for a free show at 10pm on a Wednesday night.

I think it's been about a month since I've posted. Terrible, I know. I have so many photos to upload, too. And a few stories to share. Like how on Canada day, A got us backstage passes to Parliament Hill celebrations. Unreal.

Things have been hectic in the capitol... just how I like it. Speeding right through most of June and half of July-- The last 2 weeks were Bluesfest. I saw GirlTalk (seriously love) and Steve Miller Band (I'm pretty sure I was transported back to my childhood for that hour and a half!) and danced the night away. I picked two days. That one and the final night-- Lupe Fiasco, Cheap Trick, John Butler Trio and Death Cab for Cutie. A freak rain-lightening-ish storm hit and the main stage-- the one we were about 30 ft from, crashed to the ground (see the vid). I was shaking. It was intense. The night was cancelled (so no JBT or Death Cab) and we dragged our soaking wet, completely shocked selves home.

Today, I get home from work, looked at Twitter and I see a guy I follow (thanks JF) had posted about John Butler playing a free show at 7pm about a 10 mins walk from me. I looked a the clock, it was 6:50. I grabbed my bag and ran(!) to the park. I made it just in time and was about 6 people back.

Such a great hour! He went though the crowd, made everyone sing a long and was just awesome to watch.

One of my current roomies is an artist. And not just any artist but one of those artists that are good at all kinds of art. Like painting, sculptures, drawing, oh and NAIL ART, too! I've posted my absolute favourite nails before (I'll post them again), then she created these:

Tuesday Night Dinner: Coconut Shrimp

I have lucked out (knock on wood) in the last little while. I filled out a survey that someone at work had e-mailed out about one of my favourite local fair trade (and co-op) chocolate places... And I won!

I walked over to the La Siembra office (their office is about 3 blocks from mine) and picked up my basket: Chocolate, coffee, sugar, coconut and more chocolate! Yum. I promised them I would send over my recipes and pictures of the delicious food I made using their products.

First up: Coconut Shrimp

All you need: egg, flour, coconut, shrimp, oil for frying

sizzle. sizzle. sizzle.

A quick, yet perfectly delicious, dinner.

It takes about 10 minutes to do this: Peel the shrimp and throw it into a bowl with a little flour. Dip the flour coated shrimp into a bowl with beaten egg whites. Take them out and roll in fair trade coconut. Pop them into a frying pan with a little oil. Keep an eye on them as they burn quick! Serve on lettuce, or rice. A nice addition would be sweet chili dipping sauce, but I love them just as they are.

So, will you be over for the next round?

Long weekend fun: Montreal

Saturday was a fabulous day of shopping, eating, seeing the gorgeous tulips around Parliament and drinking wine on a rooftop patio. J, F & I spent the afternoon lounging and enjoying the weather (seriously, the first day of sunshine in what felt like forever) and discussing our weekend plans. We decided to take the opportunity and drive to Montreal. I haven't been since I was young and none of us had any Sunday plans. The weather was supposed to be so/so (not too hot, not too cold, maybe a little rain). Plans we're made, drinks were had.

Turns out that Sunday was actually a perfect day. We arrived around 11am, parked and took the metro into the heart of the city. We got off at a top near the art gallery (which I'm sure would have been the first stop had it started to rain) and had fun playing on the musical swings. First 2 minutes and I remembered how much I loved this city.

Oh yes, we rent Bixi bikes and rode around the city for hours!

I made them take breaks for picture opportunities. They made me bike up steep hills.

It was a very impromptu day. We decided we were either going to end up in NYC or Montreal (8 hours vs. 1 1/2 hours) but ended up deciding that crossing the boarder in a car that didn't belong to either of us probably wasn't the best idea. I have a feeling that NYC will happen soon, though. So it was a great day. A bit of shopping (why has no one told me about Simons before?), lots of walking and oh so much time spent biking in and around the city. A perfect long weekend day.

I need to buy a bicycle.

And maybe live here.

Tulip Festival

I love May 2-4. It's sort of like the official start to summer and the beginning of (hopefully) amazing hot weather. It's been raining for the past week and finally(!) let up on Saturday. So much, in fact, I (the one that rarely tans and barely had any colour from a year in Australia) got a tan. Well, perhaps more of a burn-tan, but close enough for my liking.

So, Saturday I ended up spending the day getting food at my new favourite lunch stop (made on the spot, Italian sandwiches) and stopping by the Tulip Fesitval with J & F. I had told *Shopgirl that I would do a post on my favourite summer dress for her blog, so I seized the opportunity and had a mini photoshoot in the park with the guys.

Of course, the man with children walked into my favourite photo.

I'm not sold on this city in the winter. It's cold, bland and no one leaves their houses (err, me, anyway). But in the summer, it becomes this picture perfect place where everyone go outside and walks around and it's just really nice most of the time. I can deal with the summer here, for sure.

I was introduced to the musical selections of Girl Talk one Christmas party. Friends of mine all lived (or was it just that everyone was always there?) in one house downtown and there was always music on. This one particular party I remember hearing a mash up and asking one of them who it was. Girl Talk. I went home and myspaced (back in the day when myspace was still pretty cool, especially for getting great music). It was, as they say, music to my ears. I've been listening non-stop ever since... maybe even too much. Especially to this song:

Back in my Australia days (I long for those days) DS & I hit up Big Day Out and, of all the bands playing, the only one I was adamant about seeing was Girl Talk. It was unreal. We danced around. Sang to the songs and enjoyed the hecticness that is a Girl Talk set.

Fast forward a year and a bit and I'm looking at my Twitter feed and notice:

Yes, yes, yesssss! So, I'll hopefully catch this show. Maybe even go on stage (can anyone help me out with this?). Consider this an open invitation to anyone that would like to come to the party! S + Girl Talk + Bluesfest + You.

Post-Summer Plans

I have no idea what my plans are come September. I'm not sure if I love this, or hate this. It's sort of just... there. In the back of my mind. There are a few things on my wish list: I'd love to do an abroad work experience with my current work (although I need to get my self in gear and actually ask about the possibilities), I've been invited to meet up with some of my Australian (well, British and South African) mates in South America in September. And finally, I'm thinking that perhaps a visit to my Australian family in Adelaide may be in order. Rundle Street in the summer; love it.

I recently was looking though a friends pictures of his current Sydney adventure and it reminded me how much I love Sydney as a city. The Rocks are my absolute favourite part. I want to live here.

The Car Debate

2 years ago I bought a 3-year phone plan and 5 months later took off on an European adventure then moved to Australia for a year. Terrible planning on my part. I can barely keep a phone plan (I now have a number from my home city, not the one I am currently in) in order. Since arriving back in this country, I see the need for a car, but it seems that I'm never in one place for long enough to necessitate a vehicle. I imagine if I buy one tomorrow, I will move somewhere obscure (I hope!).

Say what you will, live sans vehicle sort of-- for lack of better words--sucks. And watching this video really adds fuel to the fire. I realize it's completely absurd, but today on my train trip back here, driving would have knocked at least 2 hours off my time. But then again, cabs, trains and borrowing cars works too? Maybe?

Playing Tourist

I arrived in the city mid-day and landed mid-town. The Marriott Marquis was quite lovely: 45 floors and elevators that felt like the tower of terror. Turns out that my fear of elevators and heights was re-sparked on the elevators that were all glass. Scary. I landed a great room on the 39th floor and looked out to Times Square-- so many people in such a small place. Don't get me wrong, I've been before, I just think the city has a million better places than this tourist trap. But as they say... when in Rome:

I had my camera in my bag the entire time, yet it didn't seem to make an appearance until I went to Tom's Restaurant and then again on my final day. I spent Friday walking. And then more walking and finally, a little more walking (and about the same in shopping). I went to my favourite restaurant Bondi Road although I think I'll have to wait a while to go back now... oops. And went to see Chicago (how have I never seen this before?). Add in some great food, some more shopping (5 scarves for me and a cute dress for one of my sisters) and a few photos and it was a great weekend away.

I'm going to live there.

The first hint of spring

I've been neglecting my camera lately. It's a combination of not feeling inspired (20%) and the fact that it was too damn cold to even think about my non-gloved hands holding my camera to take any photos (80%). But yesterday I went outside without a coat! Just a warm sweater and a scarf. That, in combination with the rain, means we are on the path to SUMMER(!) and many more photos!

Then someone posted this to their Facebook:

30,000 images of summer. Can you imagine? It is strangely the second stop-motion video I've watched today (the first being the Adelaide Fringe Festival). I am fascinated and overly enthused for this upcoming season.

Guess what? I've been at a new job for 1 week. It's still in the realm of communications and web (all the things I enjoy) and still sort of in the non-profit sector, but vastly different from the last job. Oops. Looks like I missed writing about that --will need to be more diligent in the future!

If you know me, have met me or read my blog, you likely know my affinity for New York City. In fact, I was just there over new years. And... I'm going back! Not for long this time, but enough time to take in some sights-- perhaps catch up with some friends and do some much needed shopping (and while the dollar is at par!). So very excited!

And is a strange series of events, over the course of 24 hours, I heard from 5 people from my time in Australia. 5 people I haven't heard much from over the past 8 months and then all on one day?

Is the world trying to tell me something? Time to go back to Australia?

It has been way too long since I was able to pull out my paint set and just create. I miss that. I haven't been overly creative or crafty in the art sense since... before Australia. Yikes.

Things I will attempt: reading more (I'm about 1/3 into The Ecology of Commerce and 1/2 way through Tattoos on the Heart ) and being creative are top of the list! So, last weekend I set out to be creative, pick up a book and see a live show.

I was invited to Spins and Needles (such a great name, eh?). Arts & Crafts, a live DJ spinning tunes and a bar. Seriously-- art, booze and music. Such a perfect combination. Of course, I left my camera(s) at home. Figures. But I did manage to hang my project up at work and here it is:

Yep, that's a deer head! The coolest deer head in the office (ok, the only deer head in the office) but I think it looks pretty cool. Hooray for office art.

This weekend was also one of my favourite weekends in this city so far. My friend DT was playing a show with his band, Staylefish at a bar downtown. Post-Spins and Needles I walked over and it was amazing. I haven't seen them play in a while and I forgot how much fun going to see live bands (and especially live bands when you're friends with members of said band) is! They played, I watched, enjoyed cran + vodka, and hung out between sets. I couldn't have asked for a better or jammed packed Friday night.

There's no way this Friday is going to beat that!

Genoa St. Reunion

I've been sick for what feels like forever (3 days). After doing nothing, feeling awful, and watching (or partially) watching about 20 movies, I was happy to get a call from my former Australian roommates. L & A were in town! These two are fantastic-- not only did they take me on some fantastic road trips and adventures in my first term in Australia, they were amazing roomies.

We met up at Starbucks and reminisced about the good times in Australia. They feel the same affinity for the beach life as I do. There's something so je ne sais quoi about life there. And not just beach side life, city life too.

As you can see, we had a pretty sweet place. I can't tell you how much I miss swimming daily. Beach swimming > Pool swimming maybe? Either way, sea salt in the air ruins my hair but makes me feel so good!

There are a few things that I should have written about over the past few weeks. So, here's what I missed:

Kelly Slater's latest film-- The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D was playing at the local IMAX. It has been on my "to see list" since I saw an ad ages ago and considering it's only playing in a few theatres across Canada, I completely lucked out. Thursday night at the IMAX? Yes, please!

As my friend NL said "Kelly Slater and Jersey Shore in one night. It's like the greatest night imaginable". Yep, he's right!

Work is fantastic! I'm loving the whole communications world. I'm overly happy to be in a real job and even got to take a course on Google Analytics. Without going into too much detail, the job is ever evolving and I've got my hand in several projects (including writing a blog and social media strategy). I'll be disappointed when this job is over and am on the hunt for another one when this job is up come Mid- March. SEO, anyone?

I don't have that many winter clothes. Well, no, that is a lie. I have a lot of clothing, but I left more of it back in the hometown and brought only a few mainly winter things with me. I also have the excuse of not having a winter last year (please please please let me move back Australia way and endless summer). I forgot how great post winter sales are. A sweater for $12 (paired with a disgustingly expensive Burberry belt)... mmm huh.

And finally, I spent the beginning of this weekend in bed feeling terribly lousy. It did give me a chance to catch up on Thursday night television (30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Rec) but that was about it. I woke up on Sunday feeling significantly better and ready for a little exploration of this city. I haven't seen half as many "touristy" things as I would like (my fault), so I'm starting to adventure a little more.

This weekend's adventure brought me to Winterlude. Call me crazy, but I have never really heard of Winterlude before... until now that is. Beavertails (what a gross name for such a delicious deep friend batter dipped in sugar and cinnamon), ice sculptures, skating on the canal... and a little shopping!

So It's been quite the crazy few weeks. I left out a great visit with my cousin that lives state side, several basketball games and a great few night out.

Not bad for a month!

If you've ever talked to a Canadian in Canada or anywhere else in the world, you've probably noticed that the conversation ultimately turns to the weather. It's so hot. It's so cold. Can you believe how much snow there is? ... yep, it happens every time.

So, here I am to complain about the weather. Since I moved to this new city, I've noticed that it is remarkably colder than home.

Here's the weather at home. -15... and feels like -15. I can deal with that.

After attending Big Day Out and Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia last year, I've been dying to hit the music festival scene again.

Days in the sun, sleeping in tents, being absolutely covered in dirt... nothing compares!

Now, I have some big decisions to make.

Or none of the above? I guess the time frame & money will tell...

But I'd really like to go!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy NYC. If you've been, I'm sure you know why and if you haven't- what are you waiting for?

I typically steer clear of anything overly touristy, though. The City offers much (MUCH) more than Times Square (and the million people they jam into it on New Years Eve). That being said, when you go with someone that hasn't had to opportunity to do all the touristy things, you go*

When A and I arrived, we had a place in the Upper East Side. It was cute, but on the 6th floor of a walk-up and a subway ride away from the majority of places we had planned to go to.

Our trips here tend to revolve around good eats and walking to get more food. So when A's JW arrived a day after I did and secured us a place in W hotels, it was an offer we couldn't refuse.

For reference, this is my apartment at the W:

We hit up a few usual places that are staples to our New York lives-- and made sure we went to Bubby's. This place is by far my favourite brunch stop! We got to meet Vinny; turns out he's a radio celebrity back in Toronto.

New York, New York - it's a hell of a town!

It's been a whirl wind of an adventure this holiday season! I landed in Nashville a few days before Christmas and celebrated in Kentucky. Fun Fact: It was the first time in 17 years Nashville has had a white Christmas!

Flash forward a week... I check my flight time to assure it hasn't moved and, ready for this? Cancelled. I call in a panic-- they can't get me on a flight until January 31st. It was the 28th. So I rack my brain thinking of ways to get myself from Nashville to NYC... I finally go for this option:

December 27th at
10:00am- leave Hopkinsville, Kentucky
1:30pm- fly from Nashville to Detroit
5:00pm- Airbus from Detroit to home
8:59pm- By ticket at Greyhound station for 3:20am departure to Toronto

December 28th at
3:20am- leave home for Toronto
6:20am- board bus in Toronto
7:23pm- Arrive at Greyhound station in NYC
8:30pm- Grab (the most expensive cab in the world) to the Upper East Side
8:55pm- Climb 6 flights of stairs to the apartment situated on the top floor of a 6 floor walk up.
9:00pm- Breathe. 2 days of travel and I've made it here, finally!

Since I arrived so late, we decided to grab a typical timed dinner (ie. after 10pm) at Cafeteria. Unreal dinner-- I had the turkey burger loaded with avocado, tomato, and lettuce with fries. Yum! A opted for the MAC ATTACK (3 variations of Mac and Cheese). Since we were already there, we found a hole-in-the-wall bar to grab a drink and ended up singing karaoke with a bunch of business people all night!

Day 2 began a little late... by 11am, we managed to get ourself back outside and took a walk to Sarabeth for brunch. I thought dinner the prior night was great, but today I ordered Crab Cakes and nearly died. So so soooo good! A had Eggs Benedict-- an ideal breakfast/lunch combination!

The rest of the day took on a more photo shoot style:

Coffee. Tea. Wonderful sweets and an entertaining subway ride with a slightly less attractive (but Mad Men styled) version of Eli Roth.

Movies That Made The Christmas Movie List (Round 2)

I got a few messages reminding me that I neglected some wonderful Christmas movies last post. I'm not sure how I missed out on these, but I did... I knew my list seemed far too short!

So, here we go again! In no particular order, here is a few of the movies you may (or may not) be watching this holiday season:

CHRISTMAS VACATION! I honestly don't know how I missed this movie... It's a classic!

Love Actually. I watched this movie the other day and I think it's just one of those movies I watch year round, so I forgot that it focuses on the holidays. Regardless, a fantastic film not to be missed this Christmas!

The Holiday. The cast is unreal (it stars Jude Law and James Franco has a cameo umm sold!) and it just leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy. Another movie I can watch anytime of the year!

Another forgotten film: Bad Santa. I was reminded of this hilarious Christmas film by one of my favourite Aussie authors, Nick Earls. It's Rude, crude and amazing. What more could you want in a holiday movie?

Finally, The Santa Claus. It's little more family friendly and a cute movie to throw on while making cookies and drinking (spiked) egg nog*.

*Eggnog is not something I take part in for several reason including, but not limited to, the dairy component, the taste, the texture... maybe I'm missing out?

I recently got a flood of happybirthdaymerrychristmas messages on Facebook. It's the new thing to do. No one e-mails or IMs or calls anymore- it's Facebook messages, wall posts or texts (obviously)!

Either way, thank you for the very lovely messages!

Anyway, I came across this video that someone did with the star of Catfish (a movie that I haven't seen but have read lots about). It's awkward and uncomfortable. A little bit like having a wall-to-wall conversation on Facebook...

It's Christmas Time in The City

I can't believe it's already mid December. Last December 12th, I was on my way to start my summer vacation trip up the east coast of Australia. This year I'm dreading walking tomorrow in a meter of snow... how a year changes everything!

I've been home for a while now and I am definitely in dire need of switching my life up. Nearly 5 months without any substantial travel... who am I? As you can probably imagine, I am pretty excited to take off to Kentucky and then meet up with A in the streets of NYC. Tough life, eh? I can assure you that Stylings of S is going to get a little more exciting (and more travel/ style oriented as originally intended) in 2 short weeks. Photos and stories and videos, oh my! I can barely contain my excitement!

I've also been working on my list of Christmas movies to watch over the holidays in Kentucky. So far, I've got:

1. The Ref- A holiday classic in my family. If you have not seen it, you really should find it. Sarcastic, hilarious and Denis Leary at his best (I think, anyway)!

2. Elf - You've seen it. I'm sure you have. Even if you have a serious hate on for Will Ferrell, you have to love this movie, right?

3. Bell, Book and Candle - You probably have not seen this film. I recently met a diehard movie buff who hadn't even heard of it. It stars James Stewart and Kim Novak and it's wonderfully enchanting! It is also the reason I will name my cat (if I ever have one) Pyewacket.

4. Home alone- A holiday classic! It's hard to believe this movie was made in 1990! Which makes me... just old enough to remember watching it!

Life on the job hunt is incredibly ____________ (frustrating boring, difficult, exciting-- you pick!). But alas, I am not giving up hope! Continuously looking, searching, uncovering things I never thought of before... perhaps that's the best bit!

Either way, I'm stuck to my Mac like glue (terrible saying) and have been putting a few things on in the background while I search. I've completed the first season of How to Make it in America - round 2! Fantastic show; makes me want to be back in the City. But I digress: How to Make it stars Bryan Greenberg (whom you can follow on Twitter here)-- he's been in quite a few shows, movies and he's a musician. Talent all around!

I was sifting through his IMDB (just me?) and came across The Good Guy. I've found quite a few new movies that must have come out when I was in Australia, because I've never heard of them. This morning, I decided to give it a go:

And I love it. Where was the advertising for this film? It's got an excellent cast, great story line, good music and a bit of a Garden State feel. Find it, watch it, love it.

Winter Clothes Shopping Fun

I spent the majority of today on the couch. Scratchy throat and a fever... worst. I decided that I couldn't spent the entire day in, so I put on my sweater and scarf and headed to Starbucks for a Caramel Frap (I'm feeling that hot right now) and Winners for a little retail therapy (which, in case you were wondering, does absolutely nothing for a fever...)

I missed out on winter last year, so my cold weather clothing is lacking. I have 2 sweaters (they are actually the same sweater)-- one is now grey-black due to the fact I wore it basically everyday in Australia and the newest one is just this years edition. So, a trip to Winners:

I absolutely love this sweater, but I am absolutely not a size 0. I wish, so dearly, that it fit well. But alas, it did not.

But the colour! And the style! Why, oh Winners, must you carry the sweater I've been after for so long, in ONE size. Sigh.

I went though all of my clothes about 2 months ago and purged all of my hoodies. Well, all but 2. But those 2 are house-hoodies and shouldn't leave the house-- ever. So I was in need of a nice-ish, but comfy running to the store sweatshirt. This one I bought:

A great purple colour. Boat-neck style. So so sooooo comfy. SOLD.

I'm hoping that perhaps I look at them tomorrow and it makes me feel less feverish and great yet again! Any great sweaters on your list of things to buy this winter season?

Today's GUEST BLOGGER is Merry from Makeup By Merry.

Is it THAT time of the year already? In the Philippines, we call it the “ber” season (“brrrr” because of the cooler temps and the start of the months ending in –ber). I wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to Summer yet. It was an awesome sunshine-filled season this year, and if I could live in Summer all year long, I would! But I must admit, watching the beautiful changing of the leaves in Toronto, and getting into my Fall knits and boots have gotten me in the mood for the cooler season.

I was just getting into the swing of it all when I found myself in a jammed TTC bus surrounded by lovely people who:

a) Didn’t think anyone would mind if they sneezed or coughed in their hair or faces .

b) Didn’t think anyone would notice that they coughed into their hand (instead of their sleeve).

c) Didn’t know/care that sneezing/coughing viral mucus into the air would cause millions of droplets to land and consequently spread their cold to others.

Who doesn’t know how cold viruses are spread? Seriously? SERIOUSLY.

I have been feeling a bit blah lately. And just like that, I now have the sniffles. Just. Like. That...

Since there’s no actual cure for Rhinovirus (a cold) – I know I just have to do my best to deal with it and try not to spread it to others at home and/or at work. I could think of worse things that could happen, but when you’re a makeup artist (/language Instructor/sales associate) facing your clients with a cold is just perfect. (Insert sarcasm font).

So,

before it’s too late for me to give you a few tips on how to help prevent catching the common cold, here are a few pointers:

· Wash your hands with hand soap frequently. No, splashing your hands with water for a second DOESN’T count. Grab a couple of paper towels and set aside. Soap up and rub hands, back of hands, fingers and finger tips together as you silently (optional) sing the Alphabet from A-Z, before rinsing, and use a tissue paper to turn off the faucet. Then dry your hands with the other piece of paper towel and dispose.

· Carry some Hand Sanitizer with you. There are some really neat (and cute) purse-sized bottles that can be attached to your purse and or key chains like the ones from Purell and Bath & Body.

Holders are only $1 and hand sanitizers $2-3 each!

· DO bring some soft 2-3 ply tissues and use and dispose of them properly. DON’T leave used tissues lying around.

· DO sneeze into your sleeve if or when you can’t get your tissue out on time to protect others from showering in your mucus droplets!

DO invest in a purse hanger ($1-12 each) to prevent “Bagteria” by not placing your purse down on the floor (in washrooms, in the office, on the floor of the car etc) anywhere and everywhere you go and then bringing the purse back onto your desk, home - onto your sofa or kitchen counter! Treat your purse the same way as your shoes and leave it at the door or on a hook whenever possible. Studies show that women can pick up nasty harmful bacteria (salmonella, e-coli etc) on their purses. I got my first purse hanger from Brazil from a close friend, but I’ve since seen a few other really fashionable ones in Indigo/Chapters, and at the purse section at The Bay. They make good gift and giveaway ideas too!).

· Stay healthy: Exercise and a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water is key. If you’re already feeling a bit under the weather – Nip it in the bud and hit it with everything you have! Natural antioxidants can be found in food like: berries, guava, oranges, mangos, garlic, broccoli... and a drop of Oregano oil under the tongue once a day can help boost your immune system.

· Don’t forget your Vitamins! I also take Echinacea tablets known for its immune boosting properties daily as a natural supplement. Remember to consult your Doctor before taking any new medication or supplements!).

Invest in a Neti Pot (nasal bidet). An ancient Ayurvedic nasal and sinus irrigation device. It sounds strange but it really doesn’t hurt and only takes a couple of minutes to gently lean forward and flush out your nasal passages of dust, pollen, mucus etc..using a small pot with a spout. I bought mine for under $20 from Shoppers. You fill it with 8ml with water to make a saline solution with some pre sachet mixture of sodium bicarbonate and pH balanced sodium chloride.

· And if you still end up with a cold and need to look your best... Keep makeup light and remember to moisturize skin and lips well.

A Yellow-based concealer like this one from Tarte cosmetics, said to help de-puff and brighten under eye circles, to banish dark circles and redness around the nose, set with translucent setting powder, groomed brows (instant face lift) and a coat or two of mascara, crème blush to add a healthy glow on the cheeks and pop of color on the lips (even if you’re not usually a lips girl) can help brighten up the face and draw

attention from watery sunken or in my case, puffy eyes. Try Stilla’s multi purpose compact or NARS multiple sticks!

... *sighhhhhhh*

Green Up Halloween

I can hardly believe that Halloween is less than a week away. It seems like just yesterday I was looking forward to the beginning of summer. Halloween can be a lot of fun. Parties, trick or treating, chocolate, and costumes are just a few of the highlights. But with a lot of fun comes a lot of waste.

Check out these stats:

-According to the US Census, 36 million children between the ages of 5-14 were expected to trick-or-treat in 2009.

-111.3 million houses and apartments served as potential stops for trick-or-treaters.

-931 million pounds of pumpkins were produced in 2009 in the United States alone, with Illinois leading the pack and producing 429 million pounds.

-In 2008, there were 1,317 manufacturing businesses which produced chocolate and cocoa products.

-On average, each American consumed a whopping total of 24.3 pounds of candy in 2008.

All of that Halloween candy, jack-o-lanterns, and costumes produce a lot of waste, including wrappers, party decorations, costumes, and jack-o-lanterns that are left to rot on porches long after the festivities have ended.

Do you want to do your part to lower the negative environmental impact caused on Halloween?

Here are a few tips to reduce your Halloween waste:

1). Do not buy one-time use Halloween decorations. Buy decorations that you can keep and use year after year. In addition to reducing waste, you'll save money. When you become tired of your current decorations, see if family and friends want to swap decorations. And if you are having a party, use reusable plates and silverware. Have friends toss their plates in the dishwasher instead of the trash.

2). Ditch the car. Choose to walk the neighborhood instead of driving all over town to trick-or-treat. If your neighborhood isn't conducive to trick-or-treating (or all the good candy is across town), drive the car to one spot, park it, and then walk.

3). Choose candy wrapped in paper instead of plastic. Eliminating the amount of plastic being used will go a long way in lowering the environmental impact that happens on Halloween night.

4). Use reusable canvas bags. Instead of giving your kids plastic pumpkins to gather their candy, use a reusable bag. Canvas bags can be purchased at art stores and then decorated. Those cheap baskets usually break anyway.

5). Reuse or repurpose costumes. Instead of buying a costume or making a new one from scratch, see if your child can reuse a costume (perhaps their older brother's) or repurpose it.

These are just a few actions we can take to green up Halloween. I'd love to hear what suggestions you have!

I have very few regrets in life, but missing out on MSTRKRFT play in Byron Bay is one of them. A few of my Icelandic friends we're going and for some (now unknown) reason, I didn't go. Bad call on my part.

Just In Time For Hallowe'en

As per usual I am unprepared for Hallowe'en! Last year I went as a flapper girl (costume decision was made about 20 minutes prior to leaving for a house party in Surfers), the year before that I went as Marilyn Monroe and previous to that... I can't even remember! This year, I'm thinking Where's Waldo(ette). Striped red and white shirt, glasses. I can do that!

So today I got in the hallowe'en spirit and instead of going pink and red for my nails- I opted OPI Ink! It's blue, purple and a pink sparkle!

A little darker than I would normally opt for, but it's pretty, eh?

This colour also really reminds me of the new M.A.C Villians line. It's fantastic and limited edition so I recommend you get to either The Bay or a M.A.C store ASAP before it's gone... forever.

For my Canadian readers (and those that have been to this glorious country), you'll know these delicious doughnuts. Sprinkle HALLOWE'EN doughnuts!

For once in (what feels like) a super long time, I have Friday off! Let me tell you: I love Fridays off! In fact, back when I was at home, prior to Europe/ Australia, No Work Fridays were all the rage with me and my friend NL. Back then I was also working Monday-Thursday full time and getting paid for a full weeks work...

But I digress. Fridays off leaves time for catching up with fellow non-career working friends. A Starbucks chat with SB, seeing some television shows I've missed over the last few weeks and the chance to see what's happening on Facebook/ Twitter. It's the last bit that lead me to this fantastic article posted to AK's Twitter page: "Willy Wonka Chewing Gum becomes a Reality". A three course meal in the form of gum. Sounds pretty disgusting, doesn't it?

Hmm...The new fad diet? A delicious way to enjoy all your favourite foods in one go? Will you try it?

I think I'll pass (I say this now, but I'm pretty sure I passed on lots of things including Facebook, but alas...)

Sometimes I stumble upon some interesting things online--facts, stories, ideas... These are the main reason I love Twitter. Say what you will about the microblogging site-- it does actually provide information more pertinent than, say, "Eating grilled cheese and watching tv" (because what you're eating is so very important to us all). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure at some point I've posted my delicious meal of the day, in fact, I've blogged about some of my favourite meals- but what I'm getting at is that Twitter is a great outlet for real information.

My fellow bloggers may (or may not) know about #blogchat-- a Sunday evening chat via Twitter that brings together a massive amount of bloggers from all over the world responding to, or answering questions posted by other Tweeters-- all surrounding a main topic. This evenings overall topic was "creating compelling content in blogs".

In this crazy 20 posts every few seconds hashtag frenzy, some interesting things came up...

Like a study on Social media and narcissism in young people. (hmm I have a personal blog...)

And did you know Pharrell Williams has a blog for young people called Kidult ? I didn't either.... now you know!

If you have any interest in blogging or just want to attempt to read about 5,000 tweets in a few hours- hop on Twitter!

#blogchat on Twitter happens every Sunday at 10pm (my time) and it's a wealth of blogging information (the brainchild of Mack Collier ) and anyone is invite to join, read, respond, read the transcript .

This photo is completely unrelated. I found it today in my iPhoto and I really liked it.

I blinked and the week went by. Wasn't it Sunday a few days ago? I sort of hate when that happens... It makes me want to be doing something much more productive with my time. Challenging work, perhaps?

Anyway, I've decided to start volunteering again. I've typically done some sort of volunteering-- in Australia it was with The Argus - an online photojournalsim paper run by the super talented students at Griffith University in the Gold Coast. The site is definitely worth a look!

This week it is for a St. Joe's Veterans Fundraiser. Workin' the bidding items table-- oh yeahh! It's something and perhaps it will line me up with some of the right people. I'd like a real job soon, please.

Sunday Funday: Beach & Dinner

If I have a day off work, it's typically Sunday (which works extremely well for me!) It means Saturday night can be whatever happens and there's no guilt factor about dragging my tired, possibly hungover self into work! It's a Win/ Win situation!

This Sunday, like last Sunday brought me to the beach! This time Port Stanley, though. I picked it because it houses my favourite fry shop in all the world, Mackies. Yum yum yum! If you come to visit me, I can almost guarantee you, you'll be enjoying these fries and the Orange drink!

The day was lovely-- part sunny, part cloudy! I didn't make it back to town in time to see DT's band play downtown... by the time I made it there, there was 2 old men playing guitar... not quite Staylefish!

The evening concluded with a fantastic dinner with KP parents- Short ribs, mashed potatoes, beans, wine and a delicious peach/ raspberry pie for desert. (Side note: If you happen to talk to KP, we had a terrible dinner of mushrooms stuffed with awful tasting tomatoes, and this really gross blue cheese)

Pretty fantastic day, if you ask me!

I've seen Jack Johnson twice now. Once at home (with A) and once when I was off on my post grad/ vacation adventures (with T, H, J & D) . Anyway, he puts on a fantastic live show and he plays the classics-- I mean, just because you have a new album out, doesn't mean we want to hear it all (right?). I've been waiting for another catchy tune and I think this one is going to do the trick!

A Day In The Life

Sunday started off gloomy, a bit rainy and overall blah. But around noon it took a turn for the most amazing and helllllo sunshine! There was absolutely no chance I was staying in on a Sunday when it's my day off work!

I took this opportunity to hit the road to Bayfield:

First stop: Black Dog Pub. How perfect is this place? I sort of want to sneak in a picture of my old dog, Chuck... I bet they wouldn't notice!

I've missed the art scene a lot lately. I have 4 canvases sitting in my room still completely blank. Must change that soon! Anyway, this is an art studio in downtown Bayfeild:

I've also missed the beach a lot. I'm having some post travel blues-- when was the last time I was in the same area for several months? It's no Surfers, but it'll do!

Shoes, shoes, shoes. I know, I really do love shoes.

The Real World: Sydney (again)

I visited Sydney a bunch of times over the last year. The Culture. The Shopping. The Sights. The Sounds-- I couldn't get enough of it!

This is one a few photos from a photoshoot around Sydney when my friend SB came to visit! I absolutely love this dress from Myer! (Pretty colours, one shoulder ruffle... cute, non?)

Really, if you haven't been to Sydney, you need to add it to your list of places to visit!

That being said, if you haven't managed to make to Australia at all, I highly recommend it! (and miss it dearly!)

If you've ever worked in any kind of customer service, you'll understand that yelling at people will never get you ahead-- ever.

I always liked to think, "Ok, you're yelling at me because you used this product for 6 months and the plastic thingermabobber fell off when you threw it off your balcony? and you want a full refund?*"... Oh, people!

Anyway, I was reading the Harvard Business Review (yeah, yeah, geek, I know) and I came across this article about how to get your way... THE NICE WAY!

Playing With Light

There was this amazing lightening storm the other night. No rain at all, just a mass amount of lightening in the sky! I love that. I tried to get a few shots, but alas my point and shoot mixed with quick and erratic lightening produced less than blog worthy images.

Then I decided to play with the light because... well, because why not?!

This was the final attempt to get my name. I seemed to have missed the 'S' sort of...

And unfortunately, blogger doesn't want to allow me to post anymore at this time, so I will leave you with the super strange 'me in a few places' shot. Weird. But geeze, I love cameras!

It's been a while since Ben Affleck made a movie that I really really wanted to see. Ok, there was He's Just Not That Into You but there was also Jersey Girl (sorry, Kevin Smith) and Gigli... point taken, I think!

OHHHHH how good does this movie look? I swear the entire theatre gasped when he took off the mask...

I woke up this morning and it was cloudy. Figures as it's one of my few days off so why would it be sunny right? (ok, I can't complain I spent the better part of the last year basking in the hot Australian sun) but I digress. This basically just meant that it wasn't a prime swimming day, but I headed over the KP's house mid-morning to eat some delicious corn and smoked bacon chowder home made by Mamma P herself! yum!

I ended up back at home mid-afternoon and was catching up on.... ok, I was catching up on Jersey Shore (FIST PUMP!) but shh and doing some facebook creeping (what else is there to do on a rainy Monday?) Well low and behold my facebooking turned into TICKETS TO MICHAEL BUBLE!

Long story short, my old high school friend JK had an extra ticket and I was the first to respond- so volia! He and I ended up grabbing drinks and food at Waldo's on King St. and taking in the show...

Buble put on a fantastic show. He interacted with the audience, sang some crowd pleasers and had the entire audience twisting and shouting- an homage to Ferris Beullers Day Off. It was great! We ended up a dozen rows back... not back for a free show!

He also played one of my favourites (and also one that played about 100 times a day on TV in Australia during the Olympics!):

So this Monday turned from blah and rainy to one of the best days in ages! Thanks, JK!
